FOOTLOOSE ROCKERS DANCE STUDIO

LESSON INFORMATION

Do you love the music from the 1950’s?  Have you ever wanted to dance to this music just like they did back then?  Well, Rock n Roll dancing is still alive, and you can learn it right here in Wollongong with the GEOFF & SUE at FOOTLOOSE ROCKERS!

WHAT IS ROCK N ROLL DANCING?

Rock n Roll is a fun, upbeat 6-count style of partner dance from the 1950’s and 1960’s and is danced to music from top artists such as Elvis Presley, Bill Haley & the Comets and Buddy Holly.  You would see it in classic movies from the ‘50s and ‘60’s such as Don’t Knock the Rock, and in TV shows such as Happy Days.

THE NEXT BEGINNERS ROCK N ROLL COURSES START AS FOLLOWS:

We teach original 1950's style Rock n Roll dancing 3 nights each week at various locations across the Illawarra.  The next 5 week BEGINNERS courses start at the following locations:

6.45 PM - MONDAY 9th AUGUST :  City Diggers Club, Cnr Burelli & Church Streets, Wollongong

6.45PM - WEDNESDAY 11th AUGUST :  Dapto Leagues Club, Bong Bong Road, Dapto

6.45PM - THURSDAY 12th AUGUST :  Shellharbour Workers Club, Shellharbour Road, Shellharbour

COST OF ROCK N ROLL CLASSES

Adults are $12/person paid weekly, or you can pay for the whole course on the first night.  The 5-week course is $50 per person – that gives you a saving of $10 per person over the course.  Kids are half price.

Pay for one lesson and get two FREE lessons in the same week!

Once you have paid on the first night, you receive two free lessons in that same week for free.  In other words if you go on Monday night and pay there, you can then go on the Wednesday and Thursday in the same week for free.  If you pay on Wednesday night, you get Thursday night in the same week for free.  That's great value and excellent revision if you want to do some more dancing and socialising every week!  If you only attend the Thursday night class, the fee remains at $12/week.

STUDIO INFORMATION

  • Classes are for Adults and Kids of all ages (children need to be a minimum of 8 years)
  • Singles and couples welcome
  • No Partner necessary – we have lots of single students!
  • No need to book in – just turn up around 5 to 10 minutes early on the first night of the course at the venue that suits you.  We do enrolments on your first night.
  • We hold regular social dances where you can practice your dancing and we also arrange a lot of social activities, like ten-pin bowling, weekends away, holidays, picnics, harbour cruises etc. so there’s lots to keep you busy if you want!

ALL ABOUT THE BEGINNERS COURSE

The Beginners course is for the absolute novice with no dance experience needed.  We start with how to hold your partner and where to put your feet, so you don’t need to have any prior knowledge of dancing.   Everyone in your class will be starting out just like you, so there’s no need to feel you wouldn’t be able to do it.  This class is ideal for those with 2 left feet!

The Beginners class generally starts at 6.45 pm and goes until 7.30pm.  The course will run for a period of 5 weeks.  During the first lesson you will be taught two moves, and each week after that we’ll add an extra move, but we always go back over the previous week’s moves.  By the end of the course you will be able to dance the whole beginners routine right through from top to bottom!

If you can’t start this course, NEW COURSES START EVERY 5 WEEKS - just email us at footloose@hotkey.net.au to find out when the next course is due to start.

We also run separate courses for Beginners 2, Intermediate and Advanced dancers, which are held after the Beginners Class.  You are more than welcome to stay and watch these classes.   After you have finished your Beginners course, you can go up into the BEGINNERS 2 level.

There are lots of singles and couples, so you don’t need a partner because you can rotate around with others who don’t have partners.  Couples who want to dance together for the whole class can do that as well.

Rock n roll dancing is FUN, but just like anything new we want to learn, it takes time to sink in.  With a little patience and practice you’ll be dancing in no time at all!

ROCK N JIVE CLASS

We also teach a different style of Rock n Roll called ROCK N JIVE which is taught one night per week.  It is a combination of 1950’s Rock n Roll, Jive and Swing Dancing.  It is danced to blues, country rock and pop songs.  The next Rock n Jive Beginners course starts:

7.00PM – TUESDAY 10th AUGUST Port Kembla Leagues Club, Wentworth Street Port Kembla

The cost of the Rock n Jive lesson is $10 per week or $40 for the five week course.

BENEFITS OF LEARNING TO DANCE

  • Dancing is good for your health!  We all need exercise to help keep us fit, but what other way is there that you have as much fun?  Dancing is a very social way of getting some exercise.
  • This is the perfect way for couples to bring some fun and life back into their relationship.
  • It's a great way for singles to get out and about and meet new people.
  • You meet lots of new friends, enjoy a great social life and keep fit all at the same time.  Not only do we teach you how to dance, but we also organise lots of social activities!
  • Rock n Roll Dancing is a great aerobic workout, so you are guaranteed to burn up heaps of calories!  Rock n Roll dancing burns up between 830 – 1700 kjs/hour, depending on how fast you are dancing.
  • Dancing is a great stress reliever.  It helps to take your mind off the pressures of everyday living.

ANSWERS TO SOME COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I’ve never danced before and I have 2 left feet – will I be okay?

Yes, yes, yes!  Our beginners class is a very basic course geared to people who haven’t danced before.  Everyone on the dance floor is starting out just like you!  We show you how to hold your partner, where to put your feet, and we do it in a fun, friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

What do I wear?

Just normal casual, comfortable gear – jeans, pants, skirts, and cool shirts/tops because it can get quite warm.

What shoes do I wear?

Shoes should preferably be smooth-soled – not rubber soled like joggers.  Shoes with rubber soles tend to stop you from moving freely on the dance floor.  They should also fit snuggly on your feet so that you aren’t worried about them slipping off e.g. thongs aren’t a good idea.  Ladies court shoes are fine.  Guys, standard black shoes you wear to work or when going out are okay for you.

Do I need to book in?

There’s no need to book in.  Just turn up around 5 to 10 minutes early on the first night that you attend, because that’s when we do the enrolments.  Please note it is preferable that you start your beginners course in the first week of the course, although we do take people in during the second week as well.  If you can’t make it then, new courses start regularly, so you will need to contact us to find out when the next one starts.

Do I need a partner?

There’s no need for a partner as we have a lot of singles attending.  We have 2 sides on the dance floor – one side for those with a partner that they want to do the whole lesson with, and the other side is for single people who don’t have partners so that they can rotate around and not get stuck with the one person all night.

What age groups do you teach?

Well, we have kids from the age of 10, right though to adults in their 60’s in our main classes.  Everyone enjoys the music from the 1950’s and 60’s so it caters to a broad age range, so you’ll fit right in at any age!   Kids are welcome to attend classes as long as they are over 8.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to email us at footloose@hotkey.net.au

We hope to see you at our lessons some time!
